In this regard, Pimentel argued that <strong>the Andalusian capital \u201cis not a secondary player\u201d<\/strong>, but has achieved a prominent position as \u201cSpain\u2019s space capital\u201d, further boosted by the arrival of the <strong>Spanish Space Agency<\/strong>, which has acted as <strong>\u201ca definitive magnet\u201d for investment and international visibility<\/strong>, placing the city \u201cin the top tier of the global aerospace sector\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This momentum is complemented by strategic projects such as <strong>ESA-BIC Andalusia <\/strong>and the future Aerospace District, designed to consolidate a long-term growth model based on innovation and high value-added employment. Pimentel emphasised that <strong>\u201cSeville is already a space hub in every sense\u201d<\/strong>, capable of leading the entire value chain, and set out a clear ambition for the future: <strong>\u201cBy 2030, Seville must be the great technological metropolis and engine of innovation in southern Europe\u201d<\/strong>, with the aim of establishing itself as an international benchmark for the New Space ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The event featured an <a href=\"https:\/\/newspaceandsolutions.com\/en\/pedro-duque-europe-must-define-itself-better-yesterday-than-today-and-better-today-than-tomorrow-to-maintain-its-relevance-on-the-global-stage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>interview with Pedro Duque<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <em>Spanish astronaut and president of <strong>Hispasat<\/strong><\/em>, who highlighted the maturity and strategic nature of the space sector today, emphasising its full integration into the economy and society. On the international stage, he insisted that Europe must urgently define its role in the new space race, particularly in light of the return to the Moon, stating that <strong>\u201cEurope must decide sooner rather than later, and today rather than tomorrow, if it wishes to be a key player<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted <strong>Spain\u2019s potential<\/strong>, noting that <strong>\u201cit has achieved a position commensurate with its technological capacity and talent\u201d<\/strong>, though he cautioned about the challenge of accessing private capital. Finally, he sent a clear message about the future: \u201cThe expansion of the space sector requires more talent than we currently have available\u201d, emphasising the need to inspire and train the next generations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The key role of universities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the most notable contributions, <strong>Francisco Oliva Bl\u00e1zquez<\/strong>, <em>rector of <strong>Pablo de Olavide University<\/strong><\/em>, highlighted the strategic role of universities in driving the New Space ecosystem, advocating a model based on multidisciplinary collaboration and knowledge transfer. He also presented the new Master\u2019s in Space Engineering and cutting-edge projects in radio frequency, artificial intelligence and small satellites.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andalusia, talent and technology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>\u2018Universities: Talent and Space\u2019 <\/strong>session took centre stage during the conference, highlighting the essential role of the academic sector in the growth of the industry. Andalusian universities demonstrated their leadership in various areas of New Space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sergio Fortes, <\/strong><em>a researcher with the Mobilenet \u2013 Mobile &amp; Aerospace Networks Lab (University of M\u00e1laga) at the <strong>University of M\u00e1laga<\/strong><\/em>, highlighted M\u00e1laga\u2019s role as an emerging hub for space telecommunications, noting that \u201cthe great revolution of our time is that mobile phones themselves will become the terminals for accessing satellite networks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guillermo Pacheco<\/strong>, <em>Assistant Professor (PAD) in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Fluid Mechanics at the <strong>University of Seville<\/strong><\/em>, presented the new Master\u2019s Degree in Space Systems and Operations, emphasising that \u201cthe space sector has changed significantly, driven by the New Space revolution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>From a legal perspective, <strong>Carmen Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong>, <em>Professor of Public International Law and Director of the University Chair in Aerospace and Astronomical Studies at the <strong>University of Ja\u00e9n<\/strong><\/em>, argued that \u201cwhen we talk about space, it is essential to talk about cooperation\u201d, highlighting the role of Europe and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>In the applied field, <strong>Javier Mesas, <\/strong><em>a Doctor of Engineering from the <strong>University of C\u00f3rdoba<\/strong><\/em>, addressed the use of satellite data in agriculture, stating that \u201cthe true value lies not in the data, but in the ability to convert it into information\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For her part, <strong>Sara Gonz\u00e1lez de la Torre Mu\u00f1oz, <\/strong><em>a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the <strong>University of C\u00e1diz<\/strong><\/em>, focused on the human factor in space, noting that \u201cthe future is neither human nor artificial, but hybrid\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fernando Aguilar, <\/strong><em>Professor of Graphic Expression in Engineering at the Department of Engineering<\/em>,<em> <strong>University of Almer\u00eda<\/strong><\/em>, presented the SOTER project for satellite-based road monitoring: <strong>\u201cThe idea is to automatically generate alerts regarding the condition of the road surface using satellite imagery<\/strong>,<strong>\u201d <\/strong>he explained. During the panel <strong>discussion \u2018Unmanned Aerial Mobility: the CUAM Innovation Ecosystem\u2019 <\/strong>( ), moderated by <strong>Daniel Escacena<\/strong>, <em>Secretary General for Research and Innovation at the <strong>Regional Ministry of Universities, Research and Innovation<\/strong><\/em>, the strategic role of Andalusia as an innovation ecosystem based on collaboration between universities, industry and defence was highlighted. One of the key points was the promotion of the Centre for Innovation in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (CUAM), conceived as a driver of technology transfer to the business sector. Overall, the panel highlighted that unmanned aerial mobility will be one of the key drivers of technological development in the coming years, with Andalusia positioning itself as a national and international leader.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, the panel <strong>\u2018Opportunities in the aerospace innovation ecosystem in Andalusia: defence, space and crisis preparedness\u2019<\/strong>, moderated by <strong>Esperanza Caro<\/strong>, <em>Director-General for Sustainable Development at the Regional <strong>Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mines of the Andalusian Regional Government<\/strong><\/em>, highlighted the qualitative leap made by the Andalusian ecosystem, which has gone from being in its infancy to establishing itself as a key player in the new European space landscape. During the session, it was emphasised that Andalusia has an increasingly solid industrial, technological and institutional base, as well as a strategic opportunity to integrate into major European programmes linked to defence and dual-use technologies.
